2011 Canada Elections Results 2011 : Canada Election Results 2011
1:30pm
Not final, but here are the last numbers of the night:
CON: 166 NDP: 103 LIB: 34 BQ: 4 GRN: 1
1:17am
Here's an (updated) comparison of the Toronto riding breakdown between 2008 and 2011:
2008
2011 (as of 1am, unofficial)That's a lot more blue and orange.
1:15pm
Stephen Harper takes the stage for his victory speech. Notable quotables:
NDPers chanted their party name; Cons cheer "Harper!" "Harper!" "Harper!"
Harper looks relieved. This has been a long wait for him and his party.
- "At the end of it all, Canadians choose hope, unity of purpose and a strong Canada."
- "We are and we must be the government of all Canadians, including those who did not vote for us."
- We will get down to the work of government...our job is to deliver growth and stability without raising taxes."
1:03am
CBC and Globe predict that when it's all said and done, voter turnout will hover around 61%, slightly up from last time (59% in 2008).
12:51am
So, to be fair to Rob Ford, maybe endorsing Harper will pay dividends now that Ford Country has given the Cons a strong mandate in the 905 and outer 416. Maybe?
12:43pm
Layton wants "a Canada where no one is left behind."
12:40pm
More Layton:
"You can count on us [the NDP] to ensure that parliament is addressing the needs of new Canadians."
12:26pm
Jack Layton takes the stage. Notable quotables:
Thumbs up! The crowd chants "NDP! NDP! NDP!"
- "Spring is here my friends, and a new chapter begins."
- "Tonight Canadians voted to improve health care. Public health care."
- "I let Mr. Harper know that I look forward to working with his party and in fact all parties to achieve what's best for all of our families. And I shared with him my desire to bring forward a more positive and respectful tone in Canadian parliament."
Layton holds off the gloating when genuinely offering congratulations to Michael Ignatieff and Gilles Duceppe. But he is really happy to congratulate May.
"My friends, for the first time in our history, Canadians have asked us to serve as the official opposition."
12:26pm
54% voter turn-out reported across the country. Wow.
12:17pm
Ignatieff officially loses seat in Etobicoke-Lakeshore.
11:56pm
No surprises here — Duceppe steps down as Bloc leader. He loses even bigger than Ignatieff tonight, if that's possible.
11:54pm
So as we wait for a victorious Jack, here's my question: what happens to Toronto if Hudak wins the next provincial election? Ford, Hudak, Harper? Are you ready TO? Just think about all the anti-government graffiti coverage blogTO will have!
11:49pm
It looks like Elizabeth May is going to get the Greens a seat.
11:44pm
More GTA results:
- Matthew Kellway (NDP) takes Beaches-East York
- Carolyn Bennett (Liberal) takes St. Paul's (tire slashings and all)
- Peggy Nash (NDP) retakes Parkdale-High Park
11:40pm
So will Justin Trudeau be the next leader of the Liberal Democrats (or some such party)?
11:39pm
Peter Mansbridge asks Bob Rae about merger with NDP. He doesn't really answer, but says that his party needs to "have a discussion" about the future, that a dialogue needs to start. Sounds like he'd be willing, but doesn't want to mortgage his future with such talk.
11:33pm
GTA results:
- NDP likely to gain six ridings, Conservatives 19
- Bob Rae wins in Toronto Centre
- Conservative Joe Oliver beats out Liberal incumbent Joel Volpe
- Conservative Peter Kent wins in Thornhill
11:32pm
Elizabeth May is leading in her riding, but it remains early out there.
11:31pm
So does this mean that Canadian social values can now be accurately described as conservative? Or does the rise of the NDP mute any of that talk?
11:31pm
Outside of Toronto, but Gilles Duceppe is done. Anyone remember how fiery he was at the English-language debate? Things change fast.
11:30pm
Cash doubles up on Liberal incumbent (Mario Silva) in Davenport. Everyone thought it'd be way closer than that.
11:16pm
Another look at the Toronto overview. Starting work on individual ridings!
11:15pm
Michael Ignatieff takes the stage. Some notable quotables:
"I want to offer sincere congratulations to two opponents have had the better of the night... Democracy teaches hard lessons... We have to read the lessons that Canadians have our taught us tonight.... I accept my responsibility for what has transpired tonight."
Sounds like he is done. Not a surprise. But what about the party?
Nevertheless, I admire his graciousness.
"I will serve as long as the party asks me to serve and not a moment longer."
11:11pm
Oliva Chow on at the podium at NDP headquarters, thanking Trinity-Spadina. Jack is next. They're pretty happy over there. And, hey, it's off to Stornoway!
11:10pm
According to the CBC Rob Ford has sent a note of congratulations to Stephen Harper. But of course...
11:06pm
Conservatives have taken three quarters of the seats in Ontario, which represents an increase of 19 seats.
11:03pm
Hard to keep up! Ken Dryden, my former baseball coach has lost his riding in York Centre. Conservative Mark Adler takes the win.
10:58pm
In case you're not in front of a TV. Here's the national breakdown right now:
CON: 166 NDP: 107 LIB: 29 BQ: 3 OTH: 1
10:56pm
Bob Rae just finished talking about rebuilding the Liberal party. He currently holds a narrow lead in Toronto-Centre over the NDP Candidate.
10:54pm
Here's something that you can do what you like with. Due to federal election laws, there won't be another election until 2015. Four more years...
10:50pm
And because we ponied up, the CBC gets on board and declared the Conservatives winners of a majority. Where's my sarcmark?
10:46pm
Okay, fuck it. If no one else will do it, I will. blogTO predicts Conservative majority in 2011 Canadian election. You heard it here first, folks.
10:43pm
Some CBC-declared winners in the GTA:
Jack Layton, Toronto-Danforth
Jim Flaherty, Whitby-Oshawa
Julian Fantino, Vaughan
Bev Oda, Durham
10:42pm
Fortress Toronto falling! 26 Liberal incumbents are currently trailing in the GTA.
10:39pm
Pretty much all the major broadcasters have declared the NDP the official opposition, though we're still waiting on an announcement on a Conservative majority.
10:35pm
NDP candidate Andrew Cash is currently leading Liberal Mario Silva by a healthy margin in Davenport.
10:32pm
Here's a general look at Toronto results. We'll give some stats on ridings as they become more clear.
10:26pm
The latest federal numbers have the Conservatives in majority territory, but CBC broadcasters are quick to point out that they're lead is less than a 100 votes in about 50 ridings — hence no news agency has taken the risk to declare a majority won. At least not quite yet.
10:20pm
Here are some noteworthy trends from Toronto ridings:
Jack Layton (Toronto-Danforth) and Oliva Chow (Trinity-Spadina) are leading in their respective polls. NDPer Peggy Nash leads Liberal Gerrard Kennedy in Parkdale High Park and Trottier (Con) looks in good shape over Michael Ignatieff (Lib) Etobicoke-Lakeshore. (More to come)
10:15 pm
15 minutes after the polls have closed across the country, and the Conservatives are inching toward a majority government. Also significant is that the NDP has been unofficially declared the opposition party for the first time in its history.

"I was approached by them yesterday and I've confirmed about my availability to them. I am leaving for Mumbai today and the details will be announced there," Ganguly told reporters here today.
Ganguly, who played for Kolkata Knight Riders for three IPL seasons captaining them in two editions, went unsold in the January players’ auction despite a rather modest base price of $400,000.
